HISPALYT ARCHITECTURE AWARDS 2023-2025 – VII ROOF TILE AWARD – NEW BUILD
The Alpendre Rectoral Santiago de Rabeda project was conceived as part of a strategy to regenerate a degraded rural environment, recovering the essence of traditional Galician architecture through a contemporary, sustainable intervention that is fully integrated into the landscape.
The program is fragmented into several domestic-scale volumes, allowing the building to adapt to its heritage setting while strengthening its connection to the region’s vernacular architecture.
The roof becomes one of the defining elements of the project. Its different pitched sections act as a fifth façade, engaging in a dialogue with the surrounding landscape and reinterpreting the traditional gabled roof typology characteristic of local architecture.
Ceramic roof tiles play a fundamental role in the project’s material identity, both through their presence on the roof and their reuse in other construction elements. The old tiles from the rectory were recovered and repurposed as permeable paving around the building, while ceramic fragments from the traditional granary were incorporated into renders and finishes. This commitment to reuse creates continuity between past and present, reinforcing the sustainable and site-rooted character of the intervention.
